IRETE AUTONOMOUS COMMUNITY
Irete Autonomous Community stands as one of the most historic and influential towns in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria. Strategically situated along the ever-busy Owerri–Onitsha Expressway, Irete occupies a prime position as a gateway between the state capital, Owerri, and surrounding communities. This advantageous location has made the community a thriving hub for commerce, culture, and socio-economic development. Over the years, Irete has transformed from a modest rural settlement into a vibrant and progressive society, blending modern living with the rich traditions of its people.
Known for their industriousness, unity, and cultural pride, the people of Irete have nurtured a community spirit that continues to drive development and cohesion. The town is not only a residential and cultural center but also a host to key government and institutional establishments. These include the former Bishop Lasbrey Teachers’ Training College—now Bishop Lasbrey Girls’ Secondary School, Irete Technical Secondary School, the Police Mobile Force Unit (MOPOL 18, Owerri), the Nigeria Correctional Service Zonal Command Headquarters, the Prison Armed Squad Training School, and the Eastern Zone Customs Headquarters (Zone 2). Additionally, Irete is home to the Industrial Estate, the Irete/Egbeada Housing Estate—constructed on land belonging to Irete—Graceland Estate, and notable hospitality facilities such as the Disney Hotels Irete.
Geographically, Irete enjoys both urban proximity and rural charm. It is bordered to the north by Owerri Municipal, to the northwest by Umuguma and Okuku, to the south by Orogwe and Ohii in Umunwoha, to the east by Amakohia and Egbeada, and to the west by Ndegwu. Spanning approximately 30 square kilometers, Irete is the most populous community in Owerri West LGA. It is composed of 18 vibrant villages: Umueye, Umuelele, Umueju, Umunjo, Umuoba, Umumbe, Umunkweye, Umuagwu, Umuohia, Umungada, Umunwenakoroche, Umuedi, Umunwanlo, Umuakum, Umuigolo, Umuorioji, Umuoyodomgbogo, and Umuezeduru.
Irete’s journey to full autonomy reached a milestone in June 2013 when, after 13 years of autonomous status without a traditional ruler, His Royal Highness Eze Dr. E. C. Ekwelibe (KSM, KSS), Agubiam I of Irete—Ezechimere—was crowned as the community’s first Eze. Today, governance in Irete operates through a collaborative leadership model. At its center is the Irete Community Development Union (ICDU), led by the current President General, Chidume Uzozie (KSM). Working in close partnership with the Eze, cabinet chiefs, village heads, and other stakeholders, the ICDU serves as the primary body for coordinating development initiatives, enhancing security, preserving cultural heritage, and promoting community welfare. This inclusive and participatory structure ensures that all segments of the community are represented in decision-making, fostering transparency, accountability, and unity.
Irete’s blend of historical significance, strategic location, vibrant culture, and forward-looking leadership continues to position it as a model community in Imo State—a place where tradition and progress walk hand in hand toward a shared vision of prosperity.
