Irete, Owerri West LGA – In a historic move toward improving Basic Primary Education in Imo State, the people of Irete Community in Owerri West LGA officially launched the Irete Community Primary School Revamp Project with a colorful groundbreaking and kickoff ceremony held at the school premises.

The event, which took place on Saturday 19th April 2025, marked the formal commencement of a N50 million initiative driven by the Irete Community Development Union (ICDU) to transform the educational infrastructure of the primary school and create a more conducive learning environment for the children of Irete.

The ceremony witnessed a strong turnout of dignitaries, stakeholders, and community members. Leading the event was HRH Eze Sir Chukwudi Ethelbert Ekwelibe (KSJI), Agubiam I of Irete Autonomous Community, who gave royal blessings and delivered a powerful message of encouragement and unity. In his address, the Eze emphasized the critical role of education in shaping the future of any community, commending the ICDU for its commitment to Irete Community Development.

He said, “This project is a legacy. Our children deserve the best start in life, and education is the best gift we can give them. I commend every hand and heart that has made this possible.”

Representing the ICDU President General, Mr. Chidume Uzozie (KSM), was Sir. Uzoma Uwuala, who also serves as the Chairman of the ICDU Home Branch. In his remarks, Sir. Uwuala reaffirmed the Union’s commitment to delivering the complete renovation before the next academic term. He appreciated the donors, volunteers, and working committee for their support, adding that the revamp was a continuation of ICDU’s strong legacy in supporting Imo State Education.

“We are building more than walls,” he stated. “We are building hope, pride, and a solid future for Irete children. This project is not for ICDU alone; it belongs to every proud indigene and resident of Irete.”

Sir Uzoma Iwuala went further to announce that the ICDU has commenced plans to build and set up a second health center at Ezi Irete to complement the existing one.

The Headmistress of Irete Community Primary School, Lolo Ngozi Nwanebo, expressed her gratitude for the project and the overwhelming support from the community. She noted that the state of the school’s infrastructure had long been a challenge, but this intervention brings new hope. “This is a dream come true. Our pupils will now learn in a better, safer, and inspiring environment. I am filled with joy and gratitude,” she said.

Also present was the President of the Irete Youths Association, Comrade Fabian Ononogbo who addressed the gathering on behalf of the youth. He assured the elders and leaders of the community of full youth involvement in ensuring the success of the project. “Our generation is ready to work. This project teaches and inspires us to stay committed to the betterment of our community,” he stated.

The Social/Publicity Secretary and Image Maker of the Community, Mr. Duru Sunny George (DSG), who has been instrumental in publicizing the project, highlighted the importance of media and community storytelling in building momentum. He called on all Irete sons and daughters—home and abroad—to support the initiative and make history together. “As we mark this beginning, let it also be the beginning of new thinking and action towards collective progress. We welcome more donations and volunteers. Let’s write Irete’s success story together,” he said.

The school revamp includes structural renovations of Blocks A to D, improved classroom furnishings, modern toilet facilities, office spaces, and a dedicated sports pitch. Generous individuals such as Rev. Fr. Uchenna Njoku, Mr. Philian Duru, and Aunty Vicky Ogbuehi have already taken on major blocks and pledged full renovations.

According to the project timeline shared by the ICDU executive, work will begin immediately, with a target to complete renovations ahead of the new school term. The total project budget stands at N50 million, and efforts are ongoing to raise the remaining funds needed to fully execute all planned upgrades.

Community members who attended the event were visibly enthusiastic, taking photos and sharing moments from the ceremony. The groundbreaking event was also streamed live on the official YouTube Channel of DSG HERALD NEWS, attracting viewers from the diaspora and other parts of Nigeria.

Donations toward the project are still open, and interested supporters are encouraged to contact ICDU or reach out through the official media channels.

The Irete Community Primary School Revamp Project stands as a beacon of what communities can achieve when unity, vision, and action meet. It is a powerful testament to the growing movement to improve Basic Primary Education and strengthen grassroots development in Imo State.

As the chants of children echoes hope, one thing is clear: the future of Irete Community is already brighter.
